If someone says they are in a rival gang it has to mean a competing gang by definition. I've no insight here but that is what the quote is.

What has that got to do with this woman? I was at a Tesco this morning near Heathrow and saw some other people there. Does that mean that I'm an airline steward / a Stoke fan / Black? She said that the killers were from a rival gang, that doesn't mean that they were in a rival gang *to her* does it.
