Can any of you wonderful Jack army please help. Thinking of boarding my attic and installing lighting and a loft ladder. Does anyone know of a reputable local company that will do this for me. What are the risks of having this done ( condensation) and any idea on cost, timescale etc. Thank you all in advance for any assistance you may give. Please don't tell me to have a go myself, I'm as useless as they come at DIY, and am also looking after an elderly in law, so not a lot of spare time on my hands.

Loft ladder: £100
Loft boards: work on basis of £10 to £15 per sq m
Light fitting: £20

Have you already got insulation down? If not then I would recommend adding that as well.

I assume you’re not after a precision job, you want storage space as opposed to a loft conversion? If so an odd jobber will be much more cost effective than someone who specialises in conversions and will want precision.

No drawbacks as far as I’m concerned. I have done it everywhere we have lived and it’s more than doable in a day. Your odd jobber should be happy with £20 an hour. Plus an hour for the sparky to do his bit (if the odd jobber can’t do wiring).

Sound advice from Cooperman.

If you’ve got an older property, then check out the size of the joists as lots of older houses have smaller joists and the extra weight of the boards could be an issue. Check the insulation, if you can get more in then do it because a typical house can lose about 25% of its heat through the roof, putting extra insulation in is really relatively cheap and will save if you serious cash going forward.

Had a refit of my centtal heating system recently , installer was great , worked on movable planks and boards in the attic , Baxi Engineer came to make some checks , would not go up my loft without the right access and safe walking conditions to the boiler , option was to tip toe over the joists .

Appreciate he had his Rules and Regs to follow , he did check it out and all good with the kit .

Now my loft on their advice is so insulated , but with no screwed down floorboards which seems to be the requirement for any inspection now .
