Has anyone got or used the above exercise bikes.

Do they live up to their hype.

I'd be intrigued by this as well as knowing people's views of Peleton against say a Watt Bike

My brother does iron man events and he says Watt bikes all day long. I spoke to him about this very subject last night.

That does seem to be a view that many hold - I keep hovering over the idea and then the "will I use it" voice in my head keeps chirping up.

Well that and the price tag

I have a a Wattbike Atom and had it for a few months, I used it almost daily during lockdown, the training plans and set up are very good and suit me fine but I am happy to train on my own in any case. Recently I have been training outdoors and hardly used it but I will no doubt use it a lot during the darker / wetter nights this winter.

The Wattbike hub app is very good.

I ride a lot all year round both on the road and off the road, since I have had the Wattbike my fitness has definitely improved but equally as a result of WFH I have had more time to train straight after work.

My technique has also improved.

Apps like Zwift work very well with it and you can set the bike app to be ergo or gears ie the bike sets resistance or you do.

Negatives- Not that easy to swap settings with others, my Mrs wants to use it and I have set it up perfectly for me so every time she uses it I have to move seat, bars etc.

No display with it but I have attached an old android tablet which is fits great into the supplied display holder. Any reasonable phone or tablet works with the Hub app.

You will sweat like nothing on earth unless you set up a fan to try and cool you down.

Current waiting list is about 16 weeks I think.

I don't ever see myself being out on the road on a bike but I do want to introduce this as a level of cross training. Torn between carrying on with the gym but I know that its too easy for me not to go but an hour on the bike on non running days I think will do me the world of good. Does sound like a Wattbike is the way to go but now got to persuade Mrs S that the cost can be justified....deciding is the easy bit

The wife and I have both given up the gym as we are sole carers and we cannot take a chance at the gym.

As a result the cost of the Wattbike is offset a bit and I knew I would use it as I used it regularly in the gym. I attended spin classes 2 or 3 times a week prior to COVID-19. I also used the Wattbike on days I would have ridden outside but couldn’t for some reason. We used to go to David Lloyd and it is a good gym but not exactly cheap.

I think the Peleton Bike and subscription wouldn’t interest me as I am a bit of a grumpy old man and enjoy the solitude of training at a time and for a period that suits me. The only people I could see using that system are those who enjoy spin classes but can no longer go the gym.

Friends of mine use the Zwift app as a training aid, it is said to be very good and effective by them but I have only used it once or twice and I probably need a couple of sessions to get my head around it, it also costs a bit on top of everything else.

As for convincing the Mrs I have given up the booze since the start of the year and the pre match meal at the Vesuvio since March which has probably aided my waistline and the family finances. My fitness has improved massively in the last 10 years and hopefully that will benefit my general health and my ability to wipe my own bum for now. :D

Three months on and I'm still indecisive 😂😂

Have shed some weight since making this post and the running is probably as good as its ever been but still debating on this on days like today where I won't run but want to do some level of training.

I used to be much more indecisive but I'm not so sure now...

A word here for a real bike.

Peloton is not about the kit, it’s the subscription. The fact they have a store in Canary Wharf shd tel you all you need to know.

Watt bikes, I think, are the modern version of ‘put your road bike on a turbo trainer in the garage’.

Phil - for some reason I think you are training for tri (or doing a tri). If you have a car (big if, I don’t) and don’t fancy driving in the town - Drive a few miles and find a country circuit that works for you. Honestly, riding on the road (or off road, or on gravel) is so good for you. And it will improve your bike handling in a peloton (not to be taken for granted).

A ‘gravel’ bike may give you the best of all worlds.

Thanks Leighton - that's useful but definitely not in training for a triathlon (I sink rather than swim  )

I don't think I would enjoy riding on the road and enjoy the bike when I go to the gym but think (in my head) I will do far more here especially on the nights after work at this time of year.

I dont think I ever see myself in a race but who knows

Phil I have been riding regularly on the road for about 10 years, like you I was a bit wary, I started off just doing the Afan Argoed cycle track from Penhydd car park to Cymmer and back, even went after work in the dark, it was about 9 miles up and took me about an hour on the way up and about 20 mins coming down, I then started making it longer by riding from Cwmafan and eventually Baglan, bit by bit adding more road work to the route.

I then started riding up to Glynneath from Baglan on the old road which is virtually free of traffic which was now between 25 -30 miles, I then entered a few charity rides to keep it up but I regularly do 60 miles every Saturday on the road, I have got a load of my friends into cycling. I would say the key to it is to go out with someone first who is experienced and is happy to share that experience and encouragement with you.

If you want some support to start off getting into cycling and gear I am more than happy to assist, you have your running fitness now so it’s just about getting bike fit in your gentleman’s garden area.

I know when you used to catch the supporters bus, you had special treatment from Avril and would be collected outside the Sumbler family estate, so riding on the A48 is not an ideal place to start but you do have the cycle path to the tradesman entrance to Margam Park and there is the cycle path from there over to Tondu which is all off road.

Rather than buy a Peleton bike, buy a road or hybrid bike, then a cheap turbo trainer to put it on and use free YouTube turbo trainer sessions. I use CTXC videos which are set in Melbourne and you ride along and do a HIIT session, it is all based on your perceived effort so make it as hard or easy as you want. You then have the ability to train from home fairly cheaply and a bike to ride outside when you fancy it.
