So I’ll announce before press get hold and start sharing. Copper has had to cease trading. Last night was my first full day trading since the start of lockdown during a very difficult period. I was understaffed as only Nicola has returned and I had a new member in from 6pm. Downstairs bar couldn’t be manned. Inevitably as human nature dictates a lot of customers stood up, moved around, got close and approached the bar. I was running around like mad and had to do a stock run. On return I was met by a busy bar upstairs and down and a licensing officer. I was completely caught out by the volume of people, I expected a quiet night with current restrictions. I took my eye off the ball and allowed myself to get preoccupied and found it difficult as the night wore on with a lot of drinks sold. I take full responsibility and anyone that has followed me from the start will know I always supported protection and opening once safe. Typical I open when a spike happens and extra restrictions. I was told if it was last month it would’ve been a warning. It does seem harsh for a first offence on my first day open but I respect the decision and the action and will learn from it and cooperate.
All measures were in place as the officer confirmed, QR codes, track book, signs, verbal briefings, one door in, one door out, I just couldn’t police it enough with the volume of customers and lack of staff. I remedied the short comings there and then and closed early by choice, which will go in my favour. I was visited today and told to remain closed until my improvement plan is approved. I remained proactive and stayed up until 2am drafting an improvement statement and plan which I handed over today so hopefully I’m already ahead of the game. If anyone has concerns about copper email me copperbarmanager@outlook.com and I’ll send you a copy. My NHS Appreciation day was cancelled. I will reschedule once back on track, sorry. Now that I’m closed I will turn my attention to supporting frontline workers with food hampers and support. I can’t have people in Copper but I can take Copper to them and give them a lift.
I’m truly gutted and I apologise to anyone who was at Copper and also the people that complained. I will get my head down and like since the start of lockdown put the shifts in Copper for no pay in order to turn this around. No furlough, no benefits, no takings, living on a £700 pension after 17 years service in the Royal Marines and medically discharged due to combat hearing loss. Thank you all so much for your support, I’ll keep striving and fighting to remain a truly independent craft bar/cafe that works tirelessly to create a friendly and relaxed environment for my customers.
Hopefully see you soon.
