Ukraine have requested a postponement of their World Cup play-off semi-final against Scotland, BBC Sport Scotland has learned throwing the Welsh World Cup play off games into disarray ahead of the schedule at the end of this month.

Scotland and Ukraine were set to meet in the opposite semi final to Wales and Austria on the 24th March with the two winners set to play off for a place in Qatar less than a week later in Cardiff.

But with the developing situation in Ukraine the Scottish FA has already been in talks with Uefa and Fifa, who will now consider the call from Ukraine.

“Football is inconsequential amid conflict,” wrote Scottish FA president Rod Petrie in a message to his Ukrainian counterpart this week.

Petrie said he had written “to send a message of support, friendship and unity”.

The World Cup draw is scheduled to take place on 1 April, with the tournament starting on 21 November.

No decision has yet been reached on the request.
