Golden Rules Of Business

I must be getting nostalgic today but I was reminded of a saying when I was doing my BTEC course in Business and Finance a few years ago. As part of that course, we were sent on the Young Enterprise Scheme or whatever it was called but basically it involved setting up your own business and running it for, I think, six months.
Anyway, when we were setting this up, we were told by the guy that was doing it, your business will go nowhere unless you advertise it first. Now, I can hear you all thinking, what the hell is he talking about, and what has it got to do with Swansea City? Well, let me tell you.
I had a call earlier from a Swansea fan living in England. "Phil, I thought we were playing Jamaica tomorrow" "We are I said, 4pm kick-off I think" "It’s not listed on Ceefax, Teletext or Sky Sports, are you sure" It may seem trivial but it is also quite important at the same time.
This particular fan is not on the internet. He cannot check this site, the SCOS, teamtalk, Gary Martin’s site or any other internet site for that matter. His sole way of getting info on the Swans, apart from any snippet in the paper, is through word of mouth or Teletext. He has Sky Digital so can read the local sports headlines on BBC but that hasn’t got the info either I believe. But anyway, that is a side issue.
We have been told that the ร‚ยฃ15/ร‚ยฃ20 ticket prices are there because the costs for the game are very high. We are also told that we would like a big crowd. Now I would imagine that within easy travelling distance of Swansea (and by easy I mean under 2 hours which in itself is reasonably easy via the M4 and M5) there will be thousands and thousands of Jamaicans. You only have to see what happens when the West Indies are here in cricket to prove that. Some of them will not be interested in football, but if they knew that the Jamaican National Team was in Swansea, they may well turn up. But only if they know about the game.
If they don’t then they can’t can they. It may only be a little thing but advertising is important. Remember what I started with "Your business will go nowhere unless you advertise it"
Maybe I am being picky but I cannot imagine that it is too difficult to ensure that this game was listed on Teletext/Ceefax/Sky? A quick phone call from the Vetch to the people that matter here and hey presto it should be done. It’s no use putting it on tomorrow, Ceefax usually have a week’s fixtures up there in advance so last Monday was a good start.
Come on those at the Vetch. I may not give you credit too often but this is basic surely? Despite the price, you may have missed the opportunity to put another 2 or 300 on the gate tomorrow and at ร‚ยฃ15 a ticket that’s a few more pounds in an ever decreasing pot.
Shall I put you in touch with my old college lecturer?
