John Hartson Speaks To JackPlug

Roger’s Testimonial

The Supporter’s Trust

I Remember When

Just prior to the Wales World Cup qualifiers in June Jackplug caught up with Swansea City fan John Hartson as the National side prepared for the big games in Cardiff and the Ukraine.

Hartร‚ยนs was open about his love of Swansea City FC, and speaking to him was like talking to any other Swans fan on the street. He agreed to speak to us as we were Swans fans, had we been from anywhere else his reply would have been "I donร‚ยนt want the aggro, and donร‚ยนt need the publicity mate" which sums up John Hartson, 100 percent Jack, and before all others all he wants to do is talk about the team he loves and has supported all his life ร‚ยญ Swansea City.

KH: Okay John, not a lot of people know of your love of The Swans outside of Wales, it must be hard being a professional footballer and seeing your team in such a mess.

JH: Yeah, of course it is, I thought we would do well in the second division last season, and I was surprised that we didnร‚ยนt do any better than we did. I know John Hollins hasnร‚ยนt got a lot to work with money wise, and when you look at it like that he did well to win the Championship with Swansea the year before. But the club should have got some more players in, and by that I mean players who could have kept us in the second division.

KH: Do you reckon that the owners tried to do it on the cheap?

JH: Any club will avoid spending money if they donร‚ยนt have to. They must have looked at the squad and John Hollins must have thought it was good enough, because he didnร‚ยนt buy anyone did he, and didnร‚ยนt really say why, which was a bit strange. Oh except that lad from Llanelli, who looks a bit useful so my mates tell me back home. But that wasnร‚ยนt going to be good enough, and maybe he should have been hammering at the door a bit to get some more support.

PS: So, Hollins should have been more forceful?

JH: Possibly, I donร‚ยนt know the full story, what I do know is that he took us down, and the buck usually stops with the manager, so as a fan that was bad news, and he and the club are at fault because the support on the terraces Swansea had last season wasnร‚ยนt the reason. We have magnificent fans, really noisy, so the club canร‚ยนt say it was a lack of support. But we have been promised the earth for years in Swansea, and what do we have? Third division football again, itร‚ยนs very annoying, the owners have to take the blame for their lack of investment to get things right.
