SCUNTHORPE UNITED 2 v 2 SWANSEA CITY
The MAGS at Glandford Park

A major turn around for Swansea City in just a few days saw the battling qualities of the side in full view at a wind swept and chilly Glandford Park. The Swans swept in to a seemingly unassailable 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes as first Jon Coates then John Williams put The Swans 2-0 up. Thereafter the defensive inadequacies of both sides were open for all to see. Martin Carruthers pulled a goal back on 31 minutes, and then ex Swan Steve Torpey equalised in a frenzied first half that could have easily ended up 3-3.

After the miserable and inactive game on Saturday Swansea City battled bravely in front of a crowd of 3,500 which included a handful of hardy souls in the away end, and what seemed like a bigger support comfortably tucked away on the half way line in front of the Directors box. Nicholas this time seemed more animated, and Colin Addison directed issues from the touch line but you could see their disappointment as the equaliser hit the back of Freestone’s net just seven minutes before the break.
The second half was dire by comparison and Scunthorpe looked the better of the two sides as first Peter Beagrie, then Steve Torpey again came close to clinching the game. In between constant Scunthorpe attacking John Williams earned the title of ” Miss of the week ” as he headed over from a Stu Roberts cross on 74 minutes. And Roberts himself snatched at a certain winner when in on goal from an Andy Mumford midfield run. The drama did not end there though as Beagrie again hit a full blooded volley, which was goal bound until Freestone pulled off what was described by some home supporters as a ” World Class ” save with minutes to go. And his competent handling in slippy conditions confirmed that once again The Swans, and indeed Colin Addison, will look to the big man time and time again this season as the result saw the side slip to within 4 points of bottom spot.
An ill timed tackle by Gareth Phillips saw him earn a second yellow card and a sending off in injury time, but the battling Swans held out, and these qualities will be needed again for the game at Hull City on Saturday. One look at the table today will show that Swansea City are on 9 points with 9 games gone, and that sort of form will no doubt worry what is left of the North Bank faithful. But Addison has his first Swansea point, and has had a few more made to him tonight. The biggest of all by his keeper Roger Freestone who once again showed he is indeed one of the best stoppers outside the Premiership. His world class save that left the final score at 2-2, John Williams showing he still ( at times ) has an eye for goal, and a less edgy management team on the coach for the long journey home means Saturdays away trip to Hull is more important than ever.
And team selection is an issue too, Swansea City now have six players out injured, but on loan Nathan Tyson is expected to return on Saturday with Mike Lewis attempting to keep the player at The Vetch Field for another month at least.
