You can read between the lines of the club statement this afternoon and assume that maybe Nick and Roger will find themselves in charge on a more permanent basis after Saturday’s game with the club citing financial not football reasons for the decision to let Addison and Nicholas depart the club.
This is a step into management for both Nick Cusack and Roger Freestone but one they take with the knowledge that they will have the backing of the Swansea support, having both conducted themselves so valiantly during the past few months. Cusack may well find himself combining the duty of being player, manager and PFA chairman all in one although he may want to hand over the captain’s armband.
For Roger, stepping into the shoes during his testimonial year will be a dream come true for him. He is simply Swansea City through and through and I find myself proud to call him a friend. I have known Roger in depth for the last couple of years through his testimonial and also the writing of his biography and I am sure that he will rise to the challenge as will Nick and both could prove themselves to be very capable managers and a right choice for Swansea City.
If the club appoint these two as permanent management then it will represent a further saving to the club which is increased by the news that Paul Compton has also departed the Vetch Field gates today, with his place at the head of the centre of excellence being taken by Wayne Powell.
It will always be a gamble to throw in inexperienced management into a situation like this but in Roger and Nick we will have two experienced professionals, both who possess footballing brains. They are also respected by the other players within the club and also by their fellow professionals, a fact borne out by Cusack’s appointment as PFA Chairman.
We now owe it to two of Swansea City’s loyal servants to get behind the team if they sign permanent management contracts and I think that this is a very likely scenario that they will.
To both Roger and Nick, we wish them both all the best in their management careers.
