Is the pride of wearing a team’s shirt a thing of the past?

In years gone by wearing your team colours and rallying behind the flag had great importance as landowners and nations fought on the battlefields.Today military regiments still have their badges and colours, so understandably when football clubs were being formed, clubs chose their colours to do battle on the playing field.

Wearing the club shirt meant something to players and each team had their own colours and badges to be worn with pride. In years gone by money for playing football weren’t good but the privilege of wearing the shirt and showing your skills to the supporters counted even more. I’m sure there was pride in having worn that shirt. I’m sure the pride would have been felt by the likes of Mel Nurse and Alan Curtis. They like many fine players have played at this club and keep returning when the club needs them. We as Supporters wear our colours each week to show our support, there are some so called supporters who only turn up to incite violence or racial abuse, but they are not true supporters and we must show them in no uncertain terms that they are not wanted as we wear our colours with pride. Over the last few years our team colours have been changed and uproar followed with calls for the return of our original colours.Next season it is happening thanks to Mel Nurse the saviour of this club. Lets hope this will bring back some of the lost pride in our club.

I was at the match against York on Saturday and apart from a few players like Roger there was not much evidence of our pride. Some of these players contracts run out very soon and are meant to be working for a new contract (I won’t name names but we all know them) should their contracts be renewed? One name I will mention is Steve Brodie only because he didn’t play on Saturday, this guy has made it known he wants to stay in Swansea and even though he been given some stick about his style of play (I like his style) he is a work horse and I for one can’t fault the man. He is working to get a contract and I only wish the others were working half as hard, has Brodie got pride in the shirt? I can’t say but he’s never once shamed it. Are the players of today too money orientated? Does wearing the club colours mean nothing to them? Is it that some of them don’t come from the local area (as it was in the past) so the club pride means nothing to them; I’d like to believe this isn’t true. I believe that with everything that’s gone on this season that they have lost heart. What with three owners, three managers, being middle of the league table and going nowhere has finally broken their spirit but whatever it is these guys need to be reminded of the history of this proud club and that it can be proud once more. The players may have felt that the management and staff have not been behind them 100% this season but us fans have been and it fan that’s now involved with the management committee

(It’s the fans coming though the gate that makes that club hero’s not the bosses). It is us who pay to see you play so play for us, make us proud. So here is a message for both players and supporters rally round the colours, WEAR YOUR SHIRT WITH PRIDE. BE PROUD TO BE A SWAN.
