Home >Story Index> Saunders For Manager? Wrong Time, Wrong Place |
Maybe one day, Dean Saunders will beome a highly respected and succesful manager of a football club. He has to start somewhere and sometime of course, but I fervently hope that the time and place are not Swansea City and 2002.
Let me start by making it clear that I have no axe to grind with Dean Saunders or anyone else. I’ve never met him, any of his family, or anyone connected with him as far as I know. I have nothing but respect for him as a player, he has done the business all over the footballing world. But Dean Saunders as manager of SCFC? No thanks, not at the moment anyway? Most of the arguments I have read/heard in support of Saunders’ appointment have centred around the notion that he would bring a few extra people throught the turnstiles of a Saturday afternoon. This may well be true initially, but as we all know Swans fans are a fickle bunch and the few extra will think nothing of staying away again after a few defeats. In his article entitled “Deano-The Man for the Job?” Phil Sumbler counters the argument that Saunders is untested by citing the John Toshack example. I fail to see the logic. John Toshack has since proved himself to be the kind of world class talent that comes along once in a blue moon. Can we really talk about Dean Saunders as possibly being in the same vein as John Toshack? I don’t think so. How lucky we would be to unearth two talents of Toshacks ilk in 25 years. Phil also put forward the argument that the contacts that Deano would have built up in the game over the years may allow him to “get people nearing the end of their careers to the Vetch on affordable money”. Realistically speaking Deano’s peers are always going to be out of our league financially speaking. Any players that we are going to sign are going to have to come from non-league, LOW, or from the list of 900 unemployed pros that will be floating around in the Summer. Another good reason to appoint an experienced manager with a proven track record in talent spotting and youth development. (Did someone say Flynn?) This is a crucial time in our clubs history. If you believe the rumours(and there are plenty), then there are all sorts of machinations going on behind the scenes at the Vetch. This is not the time to be taking unnecessary risks on the pitch by appointing an untested rookie manager with no previous coaching or managerial skills. Mid table consolodation is the best that we can hope for next season, even with an experienced hand at the helm. Don’t forget that the League is considering introducing two up/two down from Div 3 to the Conference. I feel strongly that we need a steadying, experienced hand that the players can respect and look up to. Brian Flynn would have been ideal in my opinion but that seems to have gone by the wayside, for one reason and another. In my opinion (and remember it is only MY opinion) appointing Dean Saunders would be an almighty risk, a leap in the dark which we cannot afford to take. Please management committe, No Dean Saunders. |
