Injury and Worry Free

Well we’re out of the Worthington Cup. Chris Kamara and Sky have returned home for bigger and brighter Premiership discussions and the Vetch Field is but a distant blurr in Paul Ince’s memory. Swansea gave a good account of themselves on TV, giving as good as they got for most of the match and even Dave Jones has been quick to praise the South Wales outfit – "If they play like that each week, theywill bebetter than anything in that division".

Oh Oh…..deja vu. Little under a year ago, Sky were at the Vetch when Swansea thumped QPR 4-0 in the FA Cup and played like a side possessed. Sidibe, Cusack and Johnny Williams (!) were all on the scoresheet, with Ian Holloway stating that we would not look "out of place" in the 2nd Division. Suddenly, we expected immediate success and promotion. A second round thumping at Macclesfield followed and dismal form lead to a final position of the bottom 4. Great. Here we go again.

Nevertheless, I am going to stick my neck on the line and say that we will definitely come back with the three points from North Wales on Saturday….I mean, why not? Finally, the Thomas and Wood partnership has returned after that dismal three game absence and we are beginning to look much fitter. Ok, we’ve lost Sharp – which is a big blow in my opinion. He would be my first choice partner with Jason Smith because O’Leary is just out of form. If Cusack is going to play and provide us with some leadership then we just don’t need him – the cause of so many defensive problems against Hartlepool and Wolves (I make it 3 goals).

One worry is Roger Freestone. Most have been crying out for Marsh to replace him as he has clearly not been fit. I must admit, apart from the Bury match, I did not realise until last Saturday’s encounter with Hartlepool, when no attempt was made to stop either goal. At least look like you are making an attempt! Rog is the best keeper at the Vetch, but he needs a fortnight to nurture that injury that looks like the same knock from last months Bury match.

And Damien Lacey? I personally thought that I would never see him in a Swansea shirt again and was disappointed to be proved otherwise on Wednesday. He was on for 20 minutes, in which time he looked unfit and strayed away from any tackles. Why bring on a defensive midfielder that won’t tackle? Michael Jackson would have been a much better introduction – young, fit and he would have given his all – more the Lacey! Oh, and please don’t even get me started on Michael Howard.

If we play to our strengths, then we will be too good for Wrexham – who look like a distinctly average outift (P6 W2 D2 L2). We have played some good sides who will be near the top come May (Hartlepool, Rushden, Bournemouth & Bury (?)) so now we need to take points of mid table sides and claim the first away points of the new season. We are fully capable and I will be held fully responsible if this isn’t achieved!
