According to the report, Martinez will sign on a non-contract basis and there is an agreement between the two clubs that if things do not work out, Martinez will be able to return back to the Bescot Stadium.
Saddlers manager, Colin Lee said “Roberto is an excellent professional. He is an intelligent footballer and a pleasure to work with. We wish him all the best at Swansea and hope that he can play a part in reviving their fortunes.”
Martinez was expected to sign last week but remained at Walsall for the weekend as they edged into the fifth round of the FA Cup. He said “It’s a challenge that I am looking forward to. The fact that I will be playing regular first-team football was the main attraction, because I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Walsall. There is a fantastic spirit running throughout the club, where everybody works hard for each other.”
On the basis that this appeared on the Walsall site yesterday we would expect the official announcemnt from the Vetch sometime this morning with Martinez ready to make his debut in front of his other employers, Sky Sports, on Saturday at Rushden.
Meanwhile there was activity at the Vetch yesterday with Stuart Jones being offered his first professional contract whilst Flynn advised three other third-year trainees – Simon Cole, John Eames and Geraint Frowen that they will not be offered professional terms and can now look for club’s elsewhere.
With no goalkeeper cover now at the Vetch we can surely expect Brian Flynn to move into this market just in case of emergencies and it will be interesting to see who he attempts to bring into the club.
