No-One Likes Us, We Don’t Care

Most of these football ‘experts’ wouldn’t even know where the Vetch Field is let alone what our chances are over the coming season. These industry know-it-alls base their opinion over what the league table said at the end of last season. And their knowledge of Swansea will stretch as far as the fact that we finished one point above the Conference last May 3rd.

They will have no idea what has gone on behind the scenes this summer – which players we have brought in and what level they are capable of performing at. Ask them who Leon Britton is and they will tell you he is a former Tory politician and that Roberto Martinez is a sangria producer who has a villa just outside Madrid. So they make us favourites for relegation.

And then they make the teams coming down the favourites for promotion. Usually always happened – happened to us in the 2001/2002 season. Always happens but rarely comes true. Relegated teams find it harder to adjust to a lower division and many of them settle for a mid table finish with the hope that they will build on it again the following season. There are always exceptions and this is what the ‘experts’ work on. They will ignore anyone that finished mid table last season unless they have read a couple of articles of a few hundred thousand pound being lashed about and they will settle themselves with the knowledge that next week they can talk about the Premiership of which they have superior knowledge. All gained from their armchair.

If you ever get the chance ask one of these people on what have they made their assumptions. Ask them why they think that the players entering the club this summer won’t perform on the pitch and they will give you a cock and bull answer that shows they know nothing. Just don’t let their predictions get to you.

I always fail to understand why anyone worries about it. Same as getting wound up by bias from HTV and BBC. Who cares. I’d rather they did ignore us and just let us get on with what we are capable of doing on the pitch. You can guarantee that the same people will show an interest if we win 4 or 5 on the trot. As the same experts what they thought the chances were of Hartlepool, Walsall or Portsmouth last season or whether they believed that West Ham or Sheffield Wednesday would get relegated. I’ll lay money on they didn’t predict that.

Just let the idiots get on with what they want to say. The publications I respect are the ones who ask for fan’s opinion when they write their previews. The fans know best about who has come in during the summer and remember there will be few in the 3rd division who can match a shopping list for quality when it includes Robbie, Leon and Golden Daps.

And if I was Brian Flynn I would get a step ladder and tell my team that all they have to do is ram those words down these people’s throats. What better motivator for anyone than someone writing them off? Would certainly be what I would use to motivate my staff in my job.

So don’t get wound up and remember if people want to listen to these people then fine but on that basis we will get under estimated and our life has become a little bit easier. In a roundabout way, being written off is a good thing.
