Free Willy

Gueret was released by Millwall over the summer after making just 20 appearances in four years, most of the recent time as understudy to new Cardiff signing Tony Warner.

Jackett has turned his attention to Gueret after first missing out on Neil Cutler who opted to join Stockport County and Martyn Margetson who signed a contract to be on the bench for Cardiff City.

“We will keep looking and we will keep competing for as a good a player as we can,” Jackett told the Evening Post. “I wouldn’t say we’re disappointed to miss out on Martyn. Cardiff have made him a good offer and he’s accepted it. “That’s football. He was worth going for – I will always try to get good players -but now we will have to find someone else. I’m not panicking.”

Last season, Gueret played 5 times for the Lions, twice in the FA Cup and three times in the league with his last appearance being in a 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest.

Gueret was released by the Lions two weeks ago and initially said “Dennis has told me I am not part of his plans,” said Gueret. “I am not sure what I will do now but I am looking for a club in France. But I am not sad to be going because of the way things happened to me.”

Earlier in the year he was offered a new deal and said back in February

“Tony Warner is out of contract as well, so it is a strange situation.

“I need to do what is best for me. I would certainly love to stay at Millwall. But if I have to go away to get what I need, I will do so. I cannot close my eyes to other possibilities.”

And with four games in a row at that stage, his first for two years, it looked as if he may have a Millwall future “I feel good to have been given a chance because I have waited a long time,” he said back in February

“Having that vote of confidence is very welcome. Being on the pitch with the lads is much better than not – I feel good being a part of the team, which is doing well at the moment.

“Now I have the opportunity to play with the lads – but also to show my quality.

“I have always had a lot of confidence in my ability. I would never put myself down.

“And if I work hard and do the best I can, I believe I will do well.”

Whatever happens, it appears that Gueret has the chance to work at Swansea and gain a contract as Jackett steps up his search to bring in a new goalkeeper before the season starts on August 7.
