Swansea Rollercoaster

The last 93 years have been a rollercoaster of ups and downs watching the Swans so why should we expect the last few weeks of the Vetch Field to be any different.

We go into the last three weeks of another football season with the top 6 in league two separated by just seven points, the top four by just two! Had Kidderminster grabbed the winner with a golden chance at the end of yesterday’s game then that two point gap would have been just one.

Fans of Yeovil, Scunthorpe, Southend, Swansea, Lincoln and Macclesfield will all fancy their own chances of promotion and all will be not just biting their fingers through their own games but nervously waiting the results from elsewhere to see if what they have produced will be enough.

Trips to Bristol Rovers and Bury are sandwiched by the last home league game against Shrewsbury as far as we are concerned and having won four of the last five matches, optimism must be high both amongst the players and the supporters. With Southend facing games against Macclesfield and Yeovil, it presents a chance for our destiny to be very much back in our own hands. Indeed, anything other than a win for Southend in the first of those games in midweek against Macclesfield and our destiny becomes just that – in our own hands.

It would be a great position to go into on Saturday knowing that three wins would ensure a return to Leage One in time for the opening of the new stadium next season. We have heard words from the chairman that we have made progress in the twelve months, which we have, but let’s be fair which Swansea fan would not be disappointed if we failed to get promotion?

Friday night at the Vetch was a nail biting game and I see no reason why the next three games will be any different. All we can do is win all three and hope that it is enough – if it isn’t then it will be the lottery of the play-offs, our position in those at minimum already being guaranteed along with the rest of the top four.

Yet again I re-iterate a point that I made prior to the Oxford game that we HAVE to be behind the side in all three games and remain as positive as we can. It would be naive to believe that everything will always go our way and if something goes wrong then we have to remain as confident and as positive as we can.

I can hardly believe that the era of the Vetch Field is almost over. I really don’t know what to expect of the Shrewsbury game. I firmly believed that our destiny was to win promotion on that day but it isn’t going to happen unless a big run of results go our way. On that basis all that leaves me with is saying goodbye to an old friend but knowing that I could be back just over two weeks later to say good bye to it again with a play off match (I am deliberately ignoring the FAW Final here!) It’s going to be a strange day but to everyone I would say assume we will get promotion and make the most of it, treat a play off if it happens a bit like an encore – never as good as the first time around but nice to get a second chance!

It really is too close to call at this moment in time. The betting sites I frequent suggest that it will be us, Yeovil and Southend celebrating come May 7 but I really wouldn’t like to call it. This roller coaster has just a few more twists and turns to come at the moment and while we are here let’s not forget to look over our shoulder as well and not just look up.

We can do it, whether we will remains to be seen but if I am to stick my neck on the block then let’s go for it.

We’ll finish second. To Scunthorpe
