Review Of The Season – Part I |

JackArmy.net is continuing it’s annual events with a three-part review of the season. Taking you back over 46 league matches,five FA Cup matches, a League Cup tie, 2 LDV Vans ties and even three in the FAW Premier Cup. This is part one of the review – looking back at August to October. The season started with the bookies pre-season favourites for promotion arriving at the Vetch. It wasn’t the start that the 9,500 crowd hoped for though as Sam Ricketts put through his own net to confirm a 2-0 defeat and predictions of doom were still to follow. A midweek win away at Rochdale was immediately followed by a defeat at Macclesfield and three games in, the Swans were averaging just one point per game. A point at Cheltenham kept up that average but It got worse as they crashed out of the Carling Cup, 3-0 at Kenny Jackett’s old side QPR and calls were raised for his head as the Swansea headed into a bank holiday weekend of Cambridge away and Lincoln at home. Two 1-0 wins, the latter one Kenny’s first win on Vetch soil and the division was beginning to take shape at the end of the month with the Swans on 10 points from 6 games and having worked themselves into the play off positions in 7th place. Garry Monk’s first red card of the season was the catalyst that set Swansea off in September as August had started. Head slapping fool Gavin Williams converted the resulting penalty. But from then on in, it was a good month for the Swans as Kidderminster, leaders Wycombe and Rushden were all beaten in the league and League One leaders Luton came unstuck at the Vetch in the LDV Vans Trophy. Jan Molby fell out with Kenny Jackett over the first goal against Kidderminster whilst Luton showed their thoughts on the LDV by fielding a pretty much all reserve side at the Vetch. But it was starting to look good for the Swans as they finished the month in 3rd place, just behind leaders Yeovil and level on points with 2nd place Scunthorpe – sound familiar? October saw the Swans take their unbeaten record to six as they followed a draw at Chester with a late Adrian Forbes goal which sunk Mansfield at the Vetch and sent the Swans to the top of the division. But it was down to earth the following week as Freddy Eastwood scored within ten seconds of his league debut as the Swans crashed 4-2 at Southend. The team though were becoming resilient and Adrian Forbes was again the hero as it became 6 straight home wins, and 6 clean sheets to boot as Leyton Orient were beaten at the Vetch. A point at Grimsby to end the month and the Swans were sitting nicely on 27 points from 15 games, level with Bristol Rovers and 2 behind leaders Scunthorpe but with a game in hand over them both thanks to a torrential downpour an hour before kick off which put pay to the Darlington fixture.
