Review Of The Season – Part II |

CLICK HERE FOR PART I OF THE SEASON REVIEW The Swans entered November in the promotion spaces but it was a bore that started the month as the participation in the LDV Vans Trophy ended with a 1-0 defeat at Wycombe. But it was the opposite end of the drama scale at the Vetch the following Saturday as a twice taken Lee Trundle penalty at the end of the game gave the Swans a 1-0 victory over then promotion rivals Bristol Rovers. And the winning run continued the following weekend as an away victory at Cheltenham in the first round of the FA Cup started what was to be another passionate cup run. Darlington were beaten at the Vetch the following Tuesday but it was down to earth with a bump when Garry Monk and Andy Robinson were both sent off as the Swans crashed 2-0 at Shrewsbury to soon remove them from that summit. And there was worse to follow the following weekend as Bury became only the second side to win at the Vetch, notching 3 in response to an early Swans goal, leaving us at the end of November in 2nd place, 5 points behind leaders Scunthorpe. December is traditionally the busiest time in the football calendar and the Swans added to that congestion by gaining a 0-0 draw at League One Stockport in the 2nd round of the FA Cup. Before though they could contemplate a 3trd round tie there was the small matter of two more league games. Marc Goodfellow, on loan from Bristol City started those off well by firing them to a 1-0 win at Oxford but it was a different story at Scunthorpe who must still be wondering how they failed to build on an early Steve Torpey goal but still it was an empty handed return for the Swans. Goodfellow was again the hero at the Vetch the following Tuesday as he capitalised on a Neil Cutler error to put the Swans into Round Three of the FA Cup in a 2-1 win. And that was the catalyst for the Swans to go goal crazy before the end of the month. Notts County were despatched 4-0 at the Vetch the Saturday before Christmas before three late goals helped the 10-man Swans to a 5-1 win away at Kidderminster on Boxing Day – Andy Gurney the Swans player sent off. And the goals did not stop there as they were 3 up against Boston at half time before easing off – eventually winning the game 3-1. They finished the year in 3rd place, a point behind Yeovil and 4 behind leaders Scunthorpe but a massive 7 points ahead of the chasing pack. There were over 11,000 at the Vetch on New Year’s Day to see the Swans in action against second placed Yeovil but it was the visitors who took the spoils in a 2-0 win – a result that was to be the Swans last home league defeat ever at the Vetch and the comments were out about our record against the leading sides being our downfall. But two days later that was behind us as the team triumphed at Rushden to send them into a FA Cup tie at Reading in positive mood. And for so long it looked as if the 3,500 strong travelling army would be rewarded as Paul Connor gave the Swans the lead only for a late goal to force a replay at the Vetch. Wycombe were next up in the league though and with a two goal lead in the bag, it looked like three more points for the Swans until two late goals saw us drop two points. Sky TV had decided the prospect of a night of cup football at the Vetch was too good to miss and the Swans put in one of their best performances of the season but it was not enough as a Reading goal in extra time sent the Swans out of the FA Cup. But the disappointment of that did not affect the Swans players as they ended Boston’s home run the following weekend before beating Chester in the league on the last Saturday of January – a 5-0 win at Caernarfon sandwiched in between in the FAW Premier Cup quarter final. As the month ended, it did appear that the Swans may be cruising towards promotion as they ended the month, sitting pretty in 2nd place, a point behind Yeovil, 2 ahead of Scunthorpe and still six ahead of Southend in 4th place. All the top three were comfortable in the knowledge they had a game in hand as well due to their FA Cup committments. Surely it couldn’t go wrong?
