Blast From The Past – Roger Freestone

There’s not a lot that hasn’t been said about this man, but when he joined from Chelsea for a small fee, how could we have known that over 10 years later we would be tearful in his departure. A true Swansea legend who not only wore the Swans badge with pride, but with heart and soul too. He first became a hero at Wembley in 1994, when we won the penalty shootout to chants of ‘Super, Super Rog…’, and he never looked back. In 99/00 season, he broke the record for clean sheets in a season – 22, and he and his defence conceded just 30 goals all season, the best in the football league. At the end of that season he went on to represent Wales against Brazil, putting in a highly commendable performance, and until Sam Ricketts this year, remained the last Swan to represent Wales. When he left last year, a part of Swansea went with him, after over 400 appearances and 3 goals (penalties) he will always have a place in our hearts.
