Wales Lose Again

Wales slipped embarrassingly to the bottom of their group tonight as a second half penalty was enough to give Poland all three points and Azerbaijan holding Austria meant Wales moving to the bottom with just 2 points from their eight games.

Poland’s win is enough to seal their trip to Germany next summer although they need a point from their game against England next month to win the group.

It’s now six defeats on the bounce for Wales in the group – two under former manager Mark Hughes (England and Poland) whilst Toshack has suffered the indignity of defeats to Austria (twice), England and now Poland.

Next month Wales will close their miserable qualifying with games against Azerbaijan in Cardiff and Northern Ireland in Belfast. One win is needed to ensure that they don’t finish bottom.

However, the chances of finishing above the Irish are over after they recorded a famous victory over England in Belfast. A David Healy goal was enough to send the English to a shock defeat leaving them needing two wins to win the group.

Elsewhere for British sides, Scotland’s faint hopes were kept alive with a 2-1 win in Norway and although not quite British the Republic of Ireland were beaten 1-0 in Dublin by France.
