Robbo: Goals Will Come

Andy Robinson has notched just two goals this season and nothing for two months but he is convinced that the goals will still flow for him as he prepares to face Bristol City at the Liberty Stadium tomorrow.

There were 18 goals last season for the man from Birkenhead including one at the Millennium stadium but it just isn’t happening for him at the moment but that is not something that worries him at this moment. Speaking to the Western Mail today, Robbo says “Because I scored 18 goals last season everybody expects me to go and score 20 this time but my job is mostly to provide and do well in the area of the pitch where I play.

“I’ve done OK but I wouldn’t say I’ve excelled.”

It was a year ago this weekend that the Swans, top of the league, fought back with a late goal at Tranmere to claim a point – Robinson himself the scorer as he celebrated with his family behind the goal and a win tomorrow could see the Swans move into some dizzy heights that they have not experienced since. The acqusition of Ian Craney – himself a dead ball specialist – could see some free kick duties being taken away from Robbo thus reducing his goalscoring chances. But again, Robbo does not worry and just trusts his own belief in his own ability “There’s competition throughout the squad and you’ve got to earn the right to play.

“My goals last year blew everyone away and I’m getting a little frustrated not getting on the scoresheet. But I believe as long as I keep on providing and working hard the goals will come.

“I’m getting in good positions, but at the moment the keeper’s either saving it or it’s hitting the bar or the post.

“It’s not going for me, but I think as soon as that first one goes then I’ll get a few more.”

The season itself has been stop start for Robbo through injury, contract negotiations and the loss of his father but Andy is not into making excuses although it would be easy to understand if he did “I don’t want to make excuses because when I go on the pitch I just think about football,” he said.

“Personal matters go out of the window. But I’ve needed those run of games and I’ve had that now. I just want a goal – whatever part of the body it comes of – and once I get that I think it will change for me.”

Robbo sat out the 7-1 victory over the Wurzels last season and whilst the same result maybe beyond us this time around, the Swans have every reason to believe that they can go out tomorrow and get the win that will take them above their visitors. And you just wouldn’t bet against an Andy Robinson goal in the process.
