Duffy Calls For Fans Patience

Darryl Duffy has admitted that the players were disappointed to hear boos ringing out from sections of the Liberty Stadium on Friday as they looked to try and peg back a one goal Carlisle victory.

Duffy said that the restlessness was felt on the pitch and although the jeers were silenced with two late goals – one from himself and one from Paul Anderson – he has asked for the fans to have patience with the side with everyone wanting the same result at the end of the day.

Speaking to the Wales on Sunday, Duffy said “I did think at one point it was going to be one of those nights for me and the team,

“I had a good chance with a header in the first half and I did everything right but the keeper pulled off a fantastic save and it didn’t go in.

“It does start to creep into your mind that it won’t happen for you, but we never gave in.

“But the crowd still began to get restless. The players were talking about it at the end of the game that we were a bit disappointed to hear the boos with 20 minutes still to go.

“It’s frustrating for everyone when you’re playing so well but the visiting team have got 10 men behind the ball – the players are frustrated as much as the fans.

“But I do think to start booing with 20 minutes to go was hasty because we showed we will go to 90-plus minutes and give it everything right to the death.

“There are expectations here, but it only takes 30 seconds to change things and supporters could be a little more patient when we are at home.

“I think we showed fantastic character because they managed to catch us with a sucker punch.

“Now we know we’re good enough to break teams down after going a goal behind. But maybe we need to start killing teams off before they have a chance of doing that.

“But hopefully our luck is changing. We’d done well the first few games of the season but not managed to get our rewards. Maybe things fell our way on Friday so hopefully we’ve turned the corner.”

His manager, Roberto Martinez was more concerned with heaping praise on his players for never giving up and coming from a goal down “I think this was our best performance so far this season; we never gave up, we kept believing and it was a clear example of how hard it’s going to be when teams come here to try and defend against us.

“It was more complete than other games here and we responded very well to going a goal down. We dominated, but it was a big test for us.

“There will be times when teams come here and be negative, but the players rose to the challenge.

“It is frustrating for us at times, but the players stayed patient and I am very proud of them.”
