Results Or Entertainment?

It’s A Results Based Business…..?

It’s been an interesting one so far. I have seen all the games that we have played and we haven’t always had the result that we wanted but am I happier after we outplay Oldham and lose or when we are well matched by Carlisle and win.

The answer to that is obvious surely. I am bound to be happier when we have won than when we have lost. Surely that is a silly question? The name of the game is winning and does it really matter if the game is dull, boring and with little goalmouth action so long as your team wins?

A look at the message board after the game though against Oldham and everyone was unanimous that we were desperately unlucky. That the football was fantastic, the home side were outplayed and only a disputed penalty and a defensive mistake cost us the deserved win. A look at the message board after the win over Carlisle says that we’re not very good, we have too many average players, we’ll never win promotion and we’re doomed unless we sign at least two more players tomorrow.

What it has thrown up is the debate technically over whether football is a ‘results based business’ or an ‘entertainment industry’ The two of them should not be exclusive of each other for sure and in the perfect world we would outplay everyone and win every week keeping both sides of the argument happy. It’s not a perfect world so I suppose we would play well enough and still win every week and that should keep everyone happy. But as it stands at the moment we are scrapping out wins but the name of the game and the only thing that will win promotion is points on the board.

However, many are quick to point back to the 99/00 season when we won the championship of what is now League Two. We won it creating several club records on the way but by grinding out 1-0 wins. We won it with an average crowd of around 6,000 people and we won it with much moaning over the quality of the football. But the record books will always show we won it.

Many fans will have said this weekend that they preferred the game against Forest than the one against Carlisle even though the latter gave us extra points. Roberto himself suggested on Friday that the “performance was more important than the result” suggesting that he would have settled for a Forest game rather than a Carlisle game.

Arsenal are quite possibly the best footballing side in the Premiership yet have struggled to make any impact on the league the past few seasons whereas Chelsea are chastised for being boring yet have two Premiership trophies in three years to show for their boredom.

As I said earlier results and entertainment should not be mutually exclusive but which one is more important to you? Would you rather see a cracking game each week with lovely passing and plenty of goalmouth action but not necessarily a win or a tight game with little goalmouth action but three points for your side?
