League One Top Four Await Leeds Decision

The Swans have been crowned Champions of League One but not had it confirmed despite the football league proclaiming them on their website as Champions with the news that the league want to wait – probably rightly so – for the unlikely outcome that Leeds are awarded 15 points back.   Indeed anything less than 13 points returned by the panel and the Swans will be champions (again?) before their kick off their final match on Saturday at Brighton.

Doncaster (2nd), Forest (3rd) and Carlisle (4th) all wait with interest whether their three horse race for 2nd will become a four horse race – or even worse to them a one horse race that none of them are competing as Leeds could rise from 6th to 2nd and ready for the Championship if the return is any more than 10 points.

Admittedly at the moment, the Swans are the only team in the top four who have their destiny in their own hands knowing that a victory at the Withdean on Saturday will 100% give them the title having earned more points than any other side in the divison this season.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of the Leeds affair – and we are not going down that route at this moment – then it needs to be over by the time the last games kick off and, possibly more importantly, the outcome should be accepted but you just know that one way or the other that will not be the case.   Any points back as a proportion and you suggest that Leeds will continue their appeal believing that a return will mean some level of vindication.  No points returned could see them continuing their fight whilst a maximum return is likely to spring further actions from Doncaster, Carlisle and Forest for starters.

Maybe we should be grateful for small mercies that at least we know where we will be plying our trade next season and that alone is cause for celebration when the open top bus hits the streets tomorrow evening.

It could be an interesting week…..
