Brandy Secures Swans Win In Brighton

It is always difficult to watch a match from behind a goal.   It is doubly difficult to watch a match from behind the goal when you are a ridiculously stupid distance away from the pitch but that didn't stop the Swans finally celebrating their title win at Brighton this afternoon.

A single goal from Fabien Brandy took the Swans past the 90 point barrier for the first time in their history and ensured two things

  • The League One title by a ten point margin according to the record books
  • The League One title even in the wonderful wacky world of Leeds United

It may not have been the most pretty of our performances this season – not by a long chalk – but it was more than good enough to take the three points and spark the most ironic chant of the afternoon in "Can we have our trophy now" or even the "You don't know what you are doing" chant aimed at the football league representatives.   But finally Garry Monk could get his hand on the silverware and as we discussed after the match this is a record breaking season in more ways than one.   We have celebrated promotion three times (Gillingham, Yeovil and Orient) and the Championship on a similar number of occasions as well.

Backed by nearer 1000 fans than the 900 fitted into the away end the Swans celebrated their silverware and their return to the Championship where they were joined this afternoon by Nottingham Forest who secured promotion thanks to their win and Doncaster's defeat at Cheltenham.

I'm not going into any huge depth about the game itself but suffice to say I firmly believe we deserved the three points.  We seemed happy enough to concede plenty of possession but Brighton didn't really threaten too much although they did have a goal chalked off for a foul on Lawrence whilst the Swans came close on more than one occasion before Brandy struck after superb Neither Leon Britton or Andy Robinson made the matchday squad – Britton was injured, no reason suggested for Robinson but you would assume an injury.

This was all about the title and whilst it was nice to get the win – our FOURTEENTH away win of the season – the celebratons lasted well past the end of the game and were watched by many Brighton fans who stayed behind to pay their work by Shaun MacDonald.

MacDonald indeed impressed from the moment he replaced Anderson in the second half and looked extremely threatening every time he had the ball at his feet.   At the back the Swans were again marshalled by the players player of the year in Garry Monk but this was a typical end of season game with Brighton ready for their end of season break and Swansea ready for their celebratory party at last.   respects to the Champions.

That was the season 2007/2008 and what a season it has been.  Nine months from defeat at Oldham and 92 points later, the Swans are Champions

Bring on the Championship.
