Monk was dismissed with just twenty minutes to go on the opening day defeat at Charlton for a second bookable offence.

But he was adamant that the sending off would only result one in twenty times after challenges like that and he must now face a suspension as a result of the decision to dismiss him.

Monk said after the match: "Probably a challenge like that would get me sent-off one in 20 times. But I'll never pull out of a 50-50 tackle, that's not in my nature.''

Whilst his manager Roberto Martinez agreed saying "I don't think it was a red card

"Garry took the ball before the man, but these things happen over the course of a season.

"Hopefully, the next decision will go our way instead.''

And in terms of the performance itself, Monk added "If Charlton are one of the favourites for promotion, then no disrespect to them, but our performance proved we've got nothing to fear.

"Perhaps we didn't have the cutting edge up front today, but we've proved in the past and we'll prove it again that we can score goals.''
