Martinez suggested that there would be sizeable changes from the side that lost at Charlton on Saturday but the squad has much depth these days meaning that it is not a youth side or anything as drastic as that which will be fielded
The Swans entertain the League Two side in the first round of the competition this evening and Martinez is clearly eyeing up a cup run to boost his early season morale on the pitch at least.
Speaking to today's Western Mail, the Swans boss says “You need to go out and try to win every game, that’s our attitude to this cup.
“It’s great that we are playing at home and we need to impose ourselves.
“After that, I don’t look at this competition as a whole, just on a game by game basis.
“There’s always circumstances and situations that motivate you each round. But we will look to win every game.”
Last season the Swans cruised past Walsall in the first round before finding themselves unlucky to lose to then Premiership side Reading but it was an improvement on most seasons when the Swans tend to miss out in Round One.
And Roberto did not need reminding of that “It was (an improvement), but I think we need to go one better.
“Every year we need to improve in every aspect and that is another good motivation for us.
“We need to get past the first two rounds if we can.
“But I don’t want to look too far ahead in this competition. We have a great home tie and we need to focus on finding the solutions to any problems Brentford cause us.
“The Carling Cup has always been a great opportunity for us in that respect." he added in reference to the changes he may make
“But it’s not just that, every time you have three games in a week the effort and demands are huge.
“We have to share that around. That’s why we have such a big a squad.
“It doesn’t bother me who plays. This squad should go into the first round of any competition with the strength and confidence to get through it.
“We are looking forward to the game but we know it will be tough,” he said.
“Brentford will come out without any pressure, they will try to enjoy the occasion and that will make it difficult for us.
“They will be organised and work hard for one another. But I don’t think they will be ultra defensive because they will want to win the football game.
“They will come here with nothing to lose. And I’m sure their players will look forward to playing at the Liberty Stadium.”
As for the timing, he added: “In a way it’s too many games too early in the season, especially when it’s for an important competition like the Carling Cup.
“You would like your players to have more minutes under their belt.
“But then in a way you want as many games as you can to get the players, especially the new ones, adapted to the tempo of the game.
