Monk’s Gratitude To Cardiff City Manager

It was Jones – then manager of Southampton – who handed Monk his first top flight experience before the manager then left Southampton under a cloud.

And Monk has revealed that the whole manner of his departure – after some unproved allegations – was a joke and it is clear that there is no doubt in his mind that Jones was badly treated.

Monk says that he will thank Jones for that chance but only after he has led his side to the fourth round of the Carling Cup on Tuesday at the Liberty Stadium.

Speaking to Wales on Sunday, Monk said “Dave gave me my first start in the Premier League – he gave me a few games and had belief in me.

“I was only young, but he gave me a chance in the Premier League with Southampton and I will always thank him for that.

“I played more games under him than anyone else at Southampton, but the way he left was a joke. It was a disgrace with all the flak he’s taken.

“I’ve seen him a few times since and there will be a handshake on Tuesday because I will always be grateful to him. But, come the game, all that will go out of the window.

“It will be good to see him again, but there’s no doubt about it, I’ll be looking to get one over on him.

“Everywhere I go I’m asked about the game.

“If I go to the supermarket or out for lunch somebody will come up to me.

“We realise how important it is and how we need to go out there to give our all for the shirt, the badge and for Swansea as a city.

“Having lived here a while, I know how big an occasion this can be and how we must be ready for it.

“Even though it’s in the cup, we know a win can strike a blow and gain an advantage.”

“I’m sure this will be even bigger. I’ve played for Southampton v Portsmouth and the Sheffield derby, but this will beat all of those.

“I think there was a poll that said this was the fifth biggest around.

“But I’m sure the fans will tell you it’s No 1 – and we will see that for ourselves this week.”
