McCarthy Says Wolves Were Not Good Enough

He told the Wolves official site “We missed our front four but they wouldn’t have done anything about the bad defending in the game

“There are two sides to every football match and Roberto (Martinez) would have been thrilled with the goals he’s got and rightfully so.

“As a beaten manager I’m disappointed because we’ve conceded after 25 seconds and that comes after conceding on four minutes on Tuesday night.

“It was just another awful start – we seemed to be all over the place but having conceded that we got back into the game, played well and got a really good goal.

“Then just before half time they got on top and got the second goal but we brought it on ourselves.

“They’ll think it was a well-worked goal and it was but we should have had him offside which is disappointing.

“In the second half they were the better team but again there wasn’t enough competition on (Jason) Scotland to allow him to turn and smash the ball into the net.

“So yes we have lost a lot of goals and a lot of firepower from the injured players who have been part of our best team.

“But I’ve not going to bemoan my luck or say ‘it’s hapless Mick McCarthy’ without his best players.

“I’m blaming our players on the pitch for the goals we conceded.

“For all the players missing we didn’t play well enough, we didn’t pass the ball well enough or maintain possession well enough to win the game.

“I spoke to Wayne and just felt he looked knackered and jaded on Tuesday night and he’d admit that,” the manager explained.

“Things weren’t happening for him.

“I wouldn’t say he was particularly out of form but he’s had almost 18 months of pretty constant football including summer internationals.

“We expect a lot of our young players.

“In his first season he gets Player of the Year, gets into the PFA team, gets all the plaudits and it’s then can he keep that level of consistency going.

“Sometimes players need a breather, just to come out of the team and have a look from the outside.

“Wayne has got to react and be part of it which he will do, he took the decision like a man and in the right way.

“He is still a fantastic keeper but I’ve got a squad of players and I thought Carl (Ikeme) was excellent.

“He was at no fault for the goals and I feel sorry that the players in front of him maybe didn’t do himself justice and he’s had to pick the ball out of the net three times.”
