Dyer notched his first Swansea City goal at the home of Portsmouth – arch rivals to Southampton the club he is on loan from.
And it came amongst a stream of abuse given out to the player not only on the books at Southampton but also one convicted of a previous crime committed in a Portsmouth nightclub.
But it was a steal of the right variety yesterday that gave Dyer all the plaudits and a rousing reception from the travelling Jack Army when he was replaced late on.
Dyer latches onto a class pass from Jason Scotland to put the Swans into the lead and was immediately engulfed by his delighted team mates as the Swans knocked the holders out of the competition.
Speaking after the game, Dyer said “I am used to these kind of welcomes from away fans so it did not faze me.
“I expected a hostile reception so the best way to answer the Pompey fans was with a goal.
“I spoke to a couple of the boys from Southampton before the game and they were laughing at the fact that I was going to Portsmouth.
“It gave me a little more incentive and the Southampton fans will be happy I scored.ย But it’s all part of football look at Harry Redknapp and Jermaine Defoe last week.
“They had a tough reception as well and Defoe answered it with a goal – that’s the way to do it.ย It’s not about bickering with the fans.
“It (his previous crime) happened but I’m trying to put it all behind me.ย It’s about how you pick yourself up.ย What happened was out of character.ย I have family and friends who know what kind of person I am.ย That’s all I care about but I don’t think anyone can question my football.”
