Dave Whelan – the Wigan chairman – made the statement citing the reason for the delay as the fact that he is currently in Majorca and will not return to the North West until Wednesday.
Whelan said "Everything is almost agreed, the only reason it has not been signed up is because I'm in Majorca
"I'm due back on Wednesday, the deal will be completed then, and we'll have a press conference on Thursday. I hope that Roberto stays with us for quite a long time.
"I was really sad to lose Steve Bruce, who was a great manager for Wigan but Roberto is a wonderful man who knows football inside out."
Meanwhile the discussions continue to take place in Swansea as to who will replace Roberto with Gary Speed, Dave Cotterill, Ady Boothroyd, Nigel Adkins and Sean O'Driscoll all reportedly in the frame whilst John Hughes remains the bookies favourite with the name of Graeme Jones also being strongly linked and the subject of some interest at the betting outlets.
