No More ’11’ Curse For Gower

Gower endured a goalless first season at the Liberty, but with a fair share of luck, he could well have ended the season with five or more strikes to his name.

The winger joined on a free transfer last summer from Southend, and quickly cemented his place in the Swans team on the left hand side of midfield.

Previous players to wear the 'cursed' 11 shirt – such as Adrian Forbes, Pavel Abbott, Darryl Duffy and Rory Fallon – have all struggled to find form on a regular basis in front of goal in the last few years

"I went in to see the boss Paulo Sousa and asked him if I could change it. I'd try anything to get me scoring again," Gower told the News of the World.

''When I first picked the number, the boys in the team told me it was cursed.

''They said whoever had that number, the goals always seemed to dry up.

''I laughed it off but I did everything but score last season.

''There were so many times when I couldn't believe how the ball hadn't ended up in the net.

''It may be like clutching at straws but I'm hoping changing the number to 27 will do the trick.''
