Fresh on the heels of breaking the Swansea City record to land Craig Beattie, Cotterill will set the club back in excess of ยฃ500,000 when the permanent deal is concluded in January.

The new signing – who will be in the squad at Newcastle this weekend – has joined on loan with that permanent move already agreed and will take place.

But the cost of the player did not worry the Swans boss who was only too happy to have the player on board.

“We are bringing in a player who will cost us some money, but I don’t have doubts that his value will be a lot greater in the future,” Sousa told the Evening Post. “I know he will be worth a lot more than he will cost us because he has a long career in front of him.

“We expect to help him become a more competitive player, and to help him get into Wales’s first XI more often.

“I am very happy to have David, he is young and Welsh, which are things I am looking for, and he has characteristics which will suit our game and are different from what we have already.

“He needs to improve in some areas, especially his communication with our other players because they expect different things from him.

“But I know he will improve playing our style of football.”
