Captain Confident Of Play Off Berth

The Swansea City captain says he was disappointed to have to sit out Saturday's derby defeat at Cardiff but respected and understood the manager's decision to rest him.

And after returning in the 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe on Monday he told the Western Mail “Of course I was disappointed because I want to play in all the big games, but the gaffer thought that was the right team to go with.

“If the gaffer feels it is for the good of the team I have to respect his decision. I can’t complain.

“It was such small margins at the weekend.

“If we had scored the goal in the last minute we would have won, but they end up going down the other end and we lost.

“We said after the Cardiff game that we did not deserve to lose that game.

“Confidence-wise we just have to keep on going. We are in a great position, if you had said before the start of the season this is where we would be, we would have taken it with both hands.

“We are still there and doing well as a team. We are punching well above people’s expectations.

“We were on the front foot from the start and from that the confidence grew and the football started to flow,” said the 31-year-old. “It was comfortable in the end.

“We’ve got two away games left now. Bristol City and Sheffield United are extremely tough places to go, but everyone is under pressure.

“We have always had good games against Bristol City and I am sure it will be the same on Saturday. It’s always a ding-dong battle and a very good atmosphere to play in.

“Our expectations are very high as players and if we fall below that then we are very critical of ourselves.

“We have to aim high and we are still confident of getting into the play-offs.”
