The Swansea City striker appeared to have been hauled down in the area as time ticked on in their last game of the season but incredibly the referee refused to point to the spot – a decision which effectively ended the Swans season.
Beattie insisted after the game that it was a penalty and told the official website "It's a stonewall penalty. The ball has come over the top at a flat angle. I've got my foot on it and he (Hird) has taken me down," said Beattie.
"I've not gone down for no reason — there was clear contact. I was in on goal so I had no reason to go down.
"I don't think the ref bottled it, but I can assure you he got it wrong.
"It's happened on more than one occasion this year, and it's cost us in the end.
"I don't want to have to say that refs have cost us, but I can give you so many examples this season.
"I should have had one at Doncaster and at home to Blackpool, the penalty at Plymouth was a joke as Dorus (de Vries) did nothing wrong.
"We also had a few very strong shouts against Sheffield United recently and Darren (Pratley) should have had one at Nottingham Forest.
"If there is a TV replay, which takes a few seconds, then we get a penalty and are just a few moments from the play-offs.
"I've been to see him (Hegley) and explained what happened, but he said the view he had was of two bodies colliding so he couldn't give a penalty.
"It's not good enough. There's too much at stake for people to get things like that so wrong
