Swansea City's vice captain could see the one other link to the relegation battle of 2003 disappear if Britton does decide to move on at the end of his contract when the season finishes.

But Tate believes that nobody could begrudge Leon the move away from Swansea and he told Wales on Sunday “Ever since he has been at the club he has been brilliant for us.

“Obviously I don’t know what his situation is or if it will be his last game.

“But if it is, I would like to say thanks for everything and wish him all the best in the future.

“He has been brilliant for Swansea City and no-one could have asked for any more than what he’s done.

“I don’t think anyone could begrudge him a move; the fans know what Leon is all about.

“He’s been here through all the bad times and the good things that are happening now, so no-one is going to accuse Leon of a lack of loyalty.

“If he’s got a chance to go to the Premier, then it’s a great opportunity that no one could deny him.

“I’ve watched the Hull game probably more than any other in my life and I think it was a penalty.

“Obviously everyone talks about James Thomas and it being his best game, but all the lads played a part in it.

“Who knows what would have happened if we hadn’t won that game. Would Leon have stayed, would Lee Trundle have come and would Andy Robinson have come? Would we be where we are now?

“People talk about his size, but he’s got a big heart and that’s the most important thing with him.

“If he does go and this is his last game then he can go with his head held high.

“I’ve loved playing with Leon, but hopefully I’ll get the chance again.

“It’s a big ask, but we’ve always left it to the last game when I’ve been at Swansea.

“Now all we can hope is that we get our win and Bristol City put in a performance at Blackpool and have a go.”
