Whilst a permanent deal seems unlikely, Swansea City are reported to be close to sealing a season long loan for the defender who was also a target of Brendan Rodgers' last season.

It is believed that Caulker is now ready for top flight action having impressed on loan at both Yeovil and Bristol City in recent seasons.  Named as the Robins' young player of the year after appearing 30 times in the Championship last season, he returned to White Hart Lane at the end of last season hungry for more first team action.

A product of Tottenham's Academy, Caulker's one appearance for the White Hart Lane club came in a Carling Cup defeat by Arsenal early last season. Having captained Spurs at youth level, he signed a first professional deal in 2009.

David James said of Caulker last season "Without a doubt he's one of our best players and I can't imagine Harry Redknapp won't want him back come the end of the season."
