Savage – Rodgers Loss Is A Huge Blow

Former Wales midfielder believes that the departure of Brendan Rodgers is a huge blow to Swansea City

Savage told the Western Mail “It’s a huge blow for Swansea,

“Any manager going there after Brendan Rodgers would have to continue with the style of play because the players who are there all fit that style.

“The playing from the back, keeping the ball and playing an attractive game, there are not too many managers out there who could do that.

“It would be a very difficult position.

“Brendan is a fantastic coach. I worked with him on Match of the Day 2 and I learnt a lot from him in those two or three hours.

“Knowing Brendan as I do, he likes to build clubs and you can see how he does that with the great job he has done at Swansea.

“The big question is will he be given time at Liverpool?

“Liverpool fans need to understand they are where they are because of their performances on the pitch in the Barclays Premier League.

“They are not a team that can challenge for the Premier League title in my eyes, I think they are five or six players behind the top sides.

“It would have been ludicrous to think that the likes of Pep Guardiola or Jose Mourinho would want that job, and considering Liverpool’s current position I think Brendan is the perfect man.

“If the call comes from a club like Liverpool you can’t turn them down,” he said. “They are a big club with a huge support.

“He has done a brilliant job to get Swansea promoted, and he has done even better to keep them in the Premier League for a second season.

“He will know how unpredictable management can be, he could get stick if he stayed at Swansea but they struggled at the start of next season. It is a difficult call to turn down.

“There will be other managers out there thinking they are achieved a lot more than Brendan has.

“But Liverpool are currently miles behind a Champions League place, let alone anything else.

“And if given time Brendan can help them get back into the Champions League.”
