The Irony Of The FA Cup Draw

For many years I have watched the FA Cup third round draw (when we progressed far enough to be in in it) and wanted a tie like the one that we pulled out this afternoon. For years we were disappointed and although there were days against top flight opposition (West Ham, Fulham, Sheffield United and Portsmouth to name a few) it was never the real ‘glamour’ tie that we all craved.

So maybe now we are enjoying a third season in the Premier League we should not be surprised to find that for the second season running we have drawn a Champions League team which I guess at least guarantees us a decent pay day if nothing else.

However, I suspect I was not the only Swans fan this afternoon watching the draw hoping for a return to the old days with a tie away at Kidderminster or somewhere like that. It’s quite amusing now to know that the FA Cup draw for us has gone full circle since we reached the top flight again where we yearn for a lower team yet when we were one ourselves it was the complete opposite.

I suspect as well that both sides will go into the cup tie with very second string sides such is the focus of both teams on the league and Europe so that will have an impact on the game. Interestingly you do wonder if the Swans will take this game slightly more seriously than their illustrious hosts which could give us a decent chance of an upset so it may be worth not just adjusting any plans you had on us for FA Cup success just yet although I suspect the bookies will be extending their odds this afternoon following the draw.

Either way I guess we cannot though moan too much and it is a day out at Old Trafford for those who will make the trip with a decent chance of TV coverage though for those who don’t which will be many considering we go there the following week in the league as well.

Get your money now on us drawing Chelsea in next year’s third round!
