This time last week the Swans were nursing their wounds after a poor showing at West Ham in a 2-0 defeat and the manager was heading out of the country – an action that proved to be the last straw for Swans Chairman Huw Jenkins who wielded the axe a little more than 72 hours later.
But rather than sitting back and assessing his options, Jenkins moved to appoint club captain Garry Monk into a head coach role and that faith was repaid in full today when the Swans outclassed their local rivals Cardiff City with a 3-0 win.
Dyer’s goal was sandwiched between strikes by Wayne Routledge and Wilfried Bony and it completed a fantastic comeback for the winger who feared his season was over in December with his injury at Norwich.
He ghosted in almost unnoticed to head home Routledge’s cross in the 79th minute to effectively seal the points for the Swans in a superb performance where they over ran Cardiff and more than paid them back for a lacklustre performance at Legoland back in November where they lost 1-0.
Speaking after the game, Dyer said “Ever since I arrived at the club, the fans have been fantastic,
“They really spurred us on today and we wanted to give something back.
“The game was massive, not just because it was a derby, but about the league position and the points we had.
“But we wanted to go out there and show that we were tough and we were all in it together.”
The atmosphere at the Liberty was at its brilliant best tonight as the Swans outsang the travelling support with the same ease that their team were outplaying Cardiff on the pitch and Dyer also paid tribute after the game to new head coach Garry Monk “It was easy for Garry to come in because he knows us and how we work,” said Dyer.
“He got his ideas across in training and we all took to them straight and got the result that we all wanted.”
