The idea of a 39th game in the Premier League season being played in various locations around the world has become a discussion point again recently and Huw Jenkins suggested that we should probably be behind it so we didn’t lose ground on the other teams in the division.
Although no firm plans have been given for what the games would look like or even how they would count towards final league positions it is clear that the NFL style moving of games to different cities in different countries is not something that floats the boat of football supporters – particularly those in Swansea – who gave it a massive thumbs down when asked.
The idea of a Game 39 has been in the offing for a few years now and I am sure that it will probably one day come to fruition. The Premier League is more about brand than football and it will be important to them to see the ‘big’ teams competing in China on a league game although where that would leave the likes of us, Crystal Palace and Hull for example is open for debate.
Would there be a demand for games overseas? The answer is a very resounding yes but that does not mean that it should be anything more then it is now with pre season tours and competitions rather than another step to take football away from what we have already known.
On a week when it was proudly declared that the transfer window had seen clubs spend over รยฃ830m on new players you know that football is already far removed from the sport that many of us started watching years back and the concept of Game 39 is another step further away.
And that is probably why people are saying no thanks?
