What’s It Like – Grassau is a small market village on the slopes of the Alps (population 6,500) in the district of Traunstein in Bavaria. It is south of Lake Chiemsee in the valley of the Tiroler Ache. The area is near the golf resort Achental between Chiemsee and Kampenwand

The game is played at Grassauer Sportpark in Brandstätt, tickets are €13.50 for adults, €9.10 for wheelchair users, companions and kids (under 10s entry is free). Pubs and Grub – Being a market village, everything will be congregated around the centre of the village. There are a number of places to eat and drink and also a nightclub – Coupe 66, open 8-midnight Tuesday – Thursday, and until 1am on Friday and Saturday

What’s It Like: The “Städtisches Stadion an der Grünwalder Straße,” also called “60er Stadion,” is the third biggest, and also the oldest football stadium in Munich, built in 1911. The stadium is the home for the second teams of Munich’s two biggest football clubs FC Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich.

The capacity of the stadium has varied from 51,800 in the 1960s to the present size of 12,500. The largest attendance was 58,200 in 1948 in a game between TSV 1860 and 1. F.C. Nuremberg.

Currently, the biggest sporting events in this stadium are the two “derbies” between the second teams from TSV 1860 Munich (the Blues) and FC Bayern Munich (the Reds). TSV 1860 Munich are called “The Lions” from the Lion on their badge. The games are always sold out and the crowds are very apssionate. The “60er Stadion” has the charm of an old school football stadium, old sitting areas of wood, old cement standing areas and the location in the heart of a residential area make this stadium unique in the modern stadium world. The famous Monty Python sketch The Philosophers’ Football Match, though pretending to be in the Olympiastadion, was filmed here.

Tickets are €25 for adults, €22 for concessions & €12.50€ for kids (seated) and €15 for adults, €12 for concessions & €7.50 for kids (standing) Tickets are available in advance at the Grünwald Stadion or pre-order them at tickets@tsv1860.de

Pubs and Grub – At the stadium, you can get two types of beer (blonde and white beer). Soft drinks are €3 for beer its €4. You pay an extra €1 for deposit on the returned cup and drinking should be allowed during the game. There’s a special Bavarian drink, called ‘Goaßn’; a mix of white beer and coke with a schnapps glass of cherry liqueur.

To eat, there’s sandwiches (€3), a type of sausage; Stadionwurst for €3.50 and sweets €1.50. There are just 5 food stands in the stadium and get very crowded if the stadium is full. There’s one restaurant inside the east side of the stadium, only open on match day.

There are many pubs and a variety of restaurants around the stadium e.g. Bavarian, Asian, Italian Greek and McDondalds. They are all within a 5-15 minute walk away. A typical Bavarian restaurant is “Obergiesinger” (Bergstraße 5, 81539 München, 00 49 89 55051666 http://www.obergiesinger.de/) it’s around 500 meters from the east standing area in the direction to the church along Martin-Luther-Str. on the left side. There you can get excellent Bavarian food for good prices and drink the best beers in Bavaria.

The main fans pub is the “Wienerwald” (Tegernseer Landstr. 114, 81539 München) it’s across the road from the stadium, open 10am-10pm has a beer garden with seating for food for 100 (with searing for food for 70 inside).

Visiting Bavaria

Some information from a mate who lives in Germany, although he’sa long way from Munich and Grassau (Thanks, Peter ) – Grassau is around 60 miles east of Munich. I suppose most Jacks will be staying in Munich.

Munich: It’s the most expensive city in Germany and although the Euro has lost some value I would suggest accommodation on the outskirts, with a good connection to the city via overground train (S Bahn). You can buy day tickets or tickets for several days; the public transport is excellent.

Travel Munich – Grassau: Leaves Munich Central (München Hauptbahnhof) at platform 11, train number M79015 Travelling time 90-120 mins. Change at Ãœbersee for the bus to Grassau, bus number 9509; approx €23 return. After the game the best bet is to get a taxi to Ãœbersee or Prien and get a train back to Munich.

Travel to Grünerwalder Stadion: easy to get to on the tube (and back); it’s in the east of the city. Grassau: Getting to Grassau is not very difficult, either by train or bus, however, getting back to Munich after the game is very difficult due to the late KO; best option is a car for that day. You can stay in Grassau which is cheaper than Munich

Doing this you don’t have to get back to Munich and can watch the team train during the week.
