He needs our support…

Why happened in the transfer window has been well documented and criticised but if the owners needed to see what was needed then they really only should have taken a look at the squad yesterday.

And with rumours that they may even still be looking to move on some more players then thy simply have to move into the loan market or explain in no uncertain terms why they have not done it with something more than what they put out on Friday.

Most supporters will accept that relegation from the Premier League will come with some budgetary cuts but we do seem to have taken that to extremes. More than ร‚ยฃ40m has come in via transfer fees which will be increased dramatically by the reduction in weekly wages. By best estimates then the budget shortfall would be somewhere between ร‚ยฃ50m and ร‚ยฃ60m based on the difference between TV revenues and parachute payments that comes with the. fall in divisions.

It was always going to be the case that the club would make cuts but they seem to be totally focused on making those cuts on the pitch which is a bit suicidal when the business into which you “invested” is that of a football club.

I am not sure what promises were made to Graham Potter when he was appointed but I cannot imagine it was to see the summer unfold in the way that it has. He has made some really shrewd purchases and signings which is good news but he needs to be backed more in the next three weeks.

We have made an excellent start to the season – two wins from two – but it would be madness for those in charge to think that the work is done and that we can compete at the same level for the next nine months without further money directed to the squad.

Tests against Birmingham and Leeds may tell us more about the team and squad than Sheffield United or Preston but even if we were to continue out 100% record then we need to get some new additions in before the end of the month and utilise the loan window.

What we saw yesterday was a group of fans behind the team and the manager, now it is time for those who hold the purse strings to show him the same loyalty. Maybe they can be the 13th man…
