Roberts sent off as Wales beat Czech Republic

It was a mixed night for Swansea’s Connor Roberts this evening as he saw red in the second half at the Cardiff City stadium but former Swans player Dan James headed the only goal of the win to give Wales their first points in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

After defeat in Belgium last week the calls were very much for a Welsh win tonight and whilst the football may not have been free flowing it was the result that was most important and Wales move up to 3rd place in the group – a point behind their visitors but with a game in hand.

James headed the only goal of the game with nine minutes left when he rose to convert a cross by Gareth Bale in a game that saw both sides end with just ten men on the pitch.

Roberts was also involved in the other red card when he, shall we say ‘made the most of’ hands being raised in his direction by Schick at the start of the second half but Wales were unable to take advantage of the difference in numbers so may be some level of irony that the goal came just minutes after Roberts saw his own red card.

Another former Swan Joe Rodon was immense at the heart of the Welsh defence and a fantastic block in the third minute of stoppage time confirmed the points for Wales who are right in contention in the group after the first series of qualifying matches.
