Phil SumblerJamal Lowe broke his goal drought with a double at Millwall yesterday afternoon – his first Swansea goals since he was on the scoresheet in a win at Barnsley back in the middle of January.
Back then, the Swansea front man, was one of the hottest properties in the Championship as he netted seven times in seven games but it was seventeen without a goal for his club before he struck two – both of them excellently taken – in yesterday’s return to form at Millwall.
Lowe struck twice in the later stages of the game to add to Andre Ayew’s first half opener which had given the Swans a first goal in almost 500 minutes of football and reduced the nerves around the club that were starting to build about missing the play offs.
The win was made more important by the fact that Brentford, Barnsley and Bournemouth all won later in the day and leaves Reading as the big ‘losers’ of the weekend with this morning’s top six all having picked up maximum points which sees the Royals for now drop out of the play off places.
“The timing of Andre’s opening goal could not have been any better. It’s a great finish – that’s the quality he has got – and it changed the mood going into half-time,” Lowe said via the club’s official website.
“We would have thought we could have created more and been ahead, but that flipped the mood.
“For me, there are going to be patches where I don’t score, and there’s going to be games when I score back to back. But it was great to be back on the scoresheet.
“It’s the same thing though – keep getting into the right positions and doing the right things, and work hard in training. This result is what you get from that.”
The one thing we have learned from Lowe is he is definitely a confidence player and if this were to be the start of another run like the one we saw around Christmas time then it could not be much better timed given the fact that we are only six games away from the end of the league season before the play offs start.
With Norwich and Watford now surely in a position where it is just a matter of time before they seal their immediate return to the Premier League it is very much down to the five teams to battle it out for the four play off places with the Swans holding a six point advantage over Reading who have just fifteen left to play for.
Lowe though is repeating the squad mantra that it is very much one game at a time for the team and that will not change with focus immediately moving to Tuesday night’s game at Sheffield Wednesday that could increase the Swans comfort position in the top six.
“We just take it game by game,” he added. “If you look too far ahead, you can get lost in the fixtures.
“We have to focus on winning games and putting points on the board. We won’t be looking around and seeing what the other teams are doing.”
