Paterson contract clause should end West Brom interest

Jamie Paterson is likely to trigger a contract extension at Swansea thanks to his appearances in the side amongst press speculation that he could be the subject of bids in the New Year.

Yesterday’s papers reported that West Brom were amongst a few clubs alerted to the fact that Paterson only signed a one year contract at Swansea when he joined back in the summer.

However, a clause in that contract will see the midfielder have that contract extended for a further 12 months when he reaches the desired levels within it.

Paterson has eight goals and four assists to his name since his summer switch and that form has not gone unnoticed both at club and international level where Russell Martin has alerted Steve Clarke to Paterson’s Scottish heritage.

Paterson has fitted in seamlessly at the Swansea.com stadium and the words he used on signing are coming true when he said โ€œIโ€™ve played against Swansea before and I know about the style of play, and from speaking to the manager I feel like the style he wants to play will really suit me.

โ€œThey have their own patterns of play, I have no doubt it is exciting times ahead for Swansea with them in charge and I am looking forward to being part of it.

โ€œThe Swansea fans demand that style of play and I think it all fits together. I have always wanted to play for a footballing side โ€“ I have played for a few before โ€“ and I am excited by it.”

On the subject of the contract itself, speaking back in October Paterson said “I donโ€™t really look at the contract situation. I just look at where I was in the summer, the position I was in mentally. I was at home and not knowing where I was going to be

“Being injured and out of contract is not a nice place to be โ€“ especially when you’ve been somewhere for five years like Bristol. I ended up at home with no club and no job.

“It was a strange feeling. But I got handed a lifeline and the club have been great with me. Hopefully, Iโ€™m showing that back on the pitch.”

As stated yesterday it is a belief that Paterson will not be keen based on his comments and the way he has fitted into the playing style at the Swans but the security of an extended contract will be very comforting to both the Swans and Paterson himself.
