EFL follows Premier League with fixture lead but FA Cup curtailed

The EFL have said that their fixture list will continue “with fixtures to be played where it is safe to do so, and the set squad criteria can be fulfilled by Clubs” after a meeting today with managers from the 72 clubs.

It is though widely expected that there will be a widespread postponement of fixtures across all divisions as clubs face up to the reality of increased positive tests for Covid-19.

Some Boxing Day fixtures have already fallen victim to the virus but the league are clear in their view that if the clubs can meet the squad criteria then the games should go ahead.

Former Swans Chairman and current EFL CEO Trevor Birch said in the league’s statement

โ€œThroughout the pandemic, our two priorities have been ensuring the welfare of those involved in EFL competitions and ensuring the fixture schedule can continue where it is safe to do so.

โ€œWe will continue to work with clubs, authorities and other agencies to monitor the Covid-19 case rate and be prepared to respond accordingly, yet for now the view remains that we can continue to deliver games safely where clubs have sufficient healthy personnel in place, on and off the pitch.

โ€œWith club mitigation measures, the mass adoption of booster jabs and Covid certification now required for larger crowds, we are sure many fans will continue to feel confident in attending matches over the Christmas period and we look forward to welcoming them.โ€

The EFL move follows a similar one earlier in the day from the Premier League who also said that they will continue with fixtures over the festive period although again a mass postponement of fixtures is expected.

The FA though have confirmed that replays in both the 3rd and 4th Round of this season’s competition will not take place due to fixture congestion building up.

The statement read “This exceptional decision was approved by the FA Board on Friday 17 December and has been taken in the wider interest of English football to alleviate the possibility of fixture congestion following several postponements in recent days and continued uncertainty ahead due to COVID-19.”

Ties will therefore be decided on the day with extra time and a penalty shoot out available if needed.
