Swansea City re-think January transfer plans

The life of a football manager can take many twists and turns but you could sense the frustration of Russell Martin yesterday as he talked about needing to re-think transfer plans for the January window as a result of this week’s decision to close the doors of Welsh football grounds.

Martin is awaiting just the full extend of the re-think of those plans but knows that the landscape has changed and that his original plans for the January window could now be thrown into disarray as a result of the decision.

The Swans have been reported as moving close to moves for several players in the window already but it could be that these deals now do not reach fruition with the Swans boss potentially having to decide which positions he will be prioritising if the budgets are cut as he is expecting.

Martin says that the likes of Jake Silverstein and Julian Winter are working on the budgetary impact of the loss of gate flow money although it could be that some of the bridging loan money is diverted into transfer budgets to try and help balance the need to strengthen a squad that is slipping towards the relegation zone.

“We’re at a disadvantage financially. It’s affecting us already and it affects January,” Martin told Sky Sports.

“It will take a bit more working out from the people back at the stadium. Once they work all that out, we will pretty much know what we have to work with.

“But the landscape has already changed and I expect it will change again at some point.

“We’ve been told it’s the next three games. After that we don’t know what’s going to happen.”

The Swans next three games are league clashes against Luton and Fulham and a FA Cup tie against Southampton with the only other home game currently scheduled for January being the visit of Preston on 22nd.

  1. Strange quote. Considering we get 16,000at home including 14,000,season ticket holders plus away supporters. Can’t see where we are losing much revenue!!!

    • Probably looking at the possibility of no fans foe the rest of the season.
With loss of profits from catering, car parking and merchandise that’s around ยฃ85,000 week or about ยฃ1.25 – ยฃ1.5 million for the rest of the season.
