Russell Martin says that the penny has finally dropped for Michael Obafemi as the striker enjoys a run of games in the side that looked almost impossible at the back end of 2020.
Back then there were rumours of loan interest – interest that never materialised into anything significant – and discussions around his attitude and whether he would ever fit into a Swansea City side.ย ย Martin remained patient with his summer signing from Swansea and, whilst it is still Joel Piroe that grabs the headlines with more goals, the value of Obafemi is coming to the fore as we saw in Monday’s win at West Brom.
Obafemi is now expected to start against both Coventry and Fulham as the Swans look to build on that Monday night win and Martin is confident that the goals will flow for Obafemiย โHe has been fantastic on the pitch. He has added another dimension to us really. We missed him at Sheffield United as he had taken a knock and that hurt us,” he said after Monday night’s win.
โBut against Albion you can see what he adds and he is disappointed that he didn’t score a goal. We will do some work on his heading this week and hopefully he will get in the scoresheet next week.
โI said all the way along that he is a great kid. He just needed a bit of help settling in.
“Everyone settles in at different rates. He is adapting to a different situation from somewhere he was very comfortable.
โHe has come here where the demands are different to what he is used to in terms of style and training.
โHe has been used to real intensity at Southampton. It is just different here in a different group.”
