Phil SumblerSwansea City will be appealing the red card shown to Ryan Manning in last night’s 5-1 home defeat to Fulham – a card that will see him sit out the next four games as a result of the suspension.
Both managers were in agreement after the game that they did not think it was a red card for the Swansea defender who mis-timed his challenge on Wales midfielder Harry Wilson and was immediately shown the red card with – as Russell Martin pointed out – little thought from the referee.
“We will appeal, he will get four games anyway because he has been sent off before, so we might as well,” said Martin after the game.
“After watching it back numerous times, in my opinion it was a poor decision.
“I couldn’t believe how quickly he got the red card out and I think everyone was really surprised.”
Fulham head coach Marco Silva said: “If you ask me if I thought it was a red card at the time, I have to say no.
“After seeing Harry Wilson’s leg, I started to think in a different way. If you saw the leg of Harry Wilson, maybe you would think in a different way also.
“I didn’t see the broadcast image. In the first moment, I thought it would be yellow but when I saw Harry’s leg I started to think in a different way.
“Maybe it’s not a red card but 15 minutes earlier it’s a clear penalty. He made a mistake there as well. It’s part of the game.”
